Dame Judi Dench plays the rich, recently bereaved and bored Mrs Henderson who, in 1937, decides to entertain herself by renovating a derelict theatre in Soho, London and putting on a cabaret show. With the help of stage manger Vivian Van Damme (Bob Hoskins) she puts on an outrageous show that pulls in the punters, and is the envy of all the theatres in London. And to keep ahead of the competition, she manages to convince Lord Chamberlain, the chief censor, to include naked ladies - with hilarious consequences. Cheeky!

Proving once again that those antipodeans seem to be very adept at making outlandishly camp movies, this is probably the best example of how to have fun crossing the desert in a school bus and high heels

Set mostly in the dressing rooms of a popular burlesque show, the hopes and ambitions of young starlets are played out, and the battle for supremacy leads to one of the girls being strangled by her own G-string. One of the earliest films made about burlesque, the content matter itself is risqué given the sensitive nature of the \'40s movie industry, but it doesn\'t stop it being fun, cheeky and sexy
