After hurriedly rushing down Bond Street to find something appropriately sparkly to wear, we arrived on the red carpet for the screening of White Diamond, the diary of Kylie's road to recovery. It tells her story from the cancellation of the Showgirl Tour, through her much documented struggle and treatment of breast cancer and finally to her return to the big stage.
Kylie herself introduced the film, an intimate documentary, filmed and directed by her best friend, stylist and gay husband, William Baker. She admitted it had been canned on a number of occasions, unsure whether she wanted the intrusion into her private life, but eventually agreed if William, her true confidante, put it together.
We follow Kylie after her treatment, re-grouping and preparing for the new tour. The action and music is punctuated by a simple black and white, question and answer session between Kylie and William. We also see her getting some much deserved time on the beach in Byron on her Australian leg of the tour. But best of all we see Miss Minogue transform from an honest and frail, newly-recovered singer, back into the multifaceted star of the big stage show, the performer that we all know and love.
The biggest thing we take away from this film is the effect that the healing energy of the audience and show have on Kylie. That, teamed with the huge motivation and drive this diminutive artist has, really help speed of her recovery. How appropriate that Kylie means 'boomerang' in Aborigine - she was thrown a rough road for a couple of years, but she has come back, with a vengeance!
