126 mins : Certificate 12A
What's the story?
Tony Stark is a ruthless, amorous, money-loving, weapons manufacturing, brainiac without scruples. That is until, ironically, some naughty Afghani terrorists get their hands on some of his weapons and blow up him and his entourage in order to kidnap him and make him design them an even bigger, badder weapon of mass destruction. It's thanks to this unfortunate turn of events that Tony grows a conscience and decides to build himself a big old suit of iron in order to escape their evil clutches and save himself and the world.
Who's in it?
Robert Downey Jr looks hotter than we've seen him in years and delivers yet another bang on performance as the billionaire playboy turned good. Terrence Howard is as loveable as always as the concerned friend, while Jeff Bridges does a sterling job of creeping us out as the businessman with suspect morals. Even Gwyneth steps up for this one, dishing up a sweet comic version of Pepper, Tony Stark's loyal assistant and wannabe love interest.
Liking?
Unlike most superheroes, Iron Man is not superhuman (like Buffy), an alien (like Superman), accidentally inflicted with super powers (like Spider-Man) or an exceptional athlete (like Batman). No, when it comes to Iron Man's prowess - it's all about his genius brain and a big strapping suit made of metal and guns. All of which makes Iron Man much more fun than your average superhero. He's not racked with guilt or self loathing. He doesn't spend an inordinate amount of time whining about his calling or about how he can't live a normal life. Iron Man is totally down with it. He loves it, in fact. And that's why we love him.
Verdict
The war on terror plot felt a little clichéd at times, but if you can get over that and give into absurdity for 126 minutes, you'll enjoy yourself immensely.
