Starring: Steve Carell, Morgan Freeman
Directed by: Tom Shadyac
(PG), 95 mins, 2007, United States
What's the story?
An eccentric newsreader - the one that featured in the 2003 Jim Carrey comedy this is a spin-off of, Bruce Almighty - is elected to congress after promising to change the world. At a loss as how he's do exactly that he starts panicking... until God turns up and tells him to build an ark, to the horror of his long-suffering family.
Who's in it?
This kind-of sequel to the 2003 Jim Carrey comedy doesn't feature that funny guy but does concentrate on that film's fairly minor Steve Carrell newsreader role. Morgan Freeman is back as God (with a silky smooth voice like that who else would you cast?) while very likeable Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham plays his exasperated wife.
Best bit
Steve Carrell. Luckily for the filmmakers, he's a very amusing man and props up this so-so effort that's interesting in concept but doesn't have the goods to back it up. The cute, albeit cheesy, creatures that want a ride in Evan's ark, help too.
Worst bit
The lame, underwritten script and gags that all too often rely on toilet humour. Plus the decision to pitch this at a younger audience, unlike the more mature Bruce Almighty. Don't go thinking this is for adults: it's purely a family affair with lots of puerile jokes to match.
Will I get bored?
Yep, the unsubtle do-gooder and environmental message becomes dull.
