Atonement DVD review

Starring: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy
Directed by: Joe Wright
(15), 123 mins, 2007, UK

What's the story?
It's the summer of 1936 and well-to-do Cecilia (Knightley) falls for childhood pal, Robbie (McAvoy). However, the course of true love never does run smooth, and following a series of events witnessed and warped by Cecilia's jealous younger sister Briony, things start to go rather badly for our star-crossed lovers...

Liking?
The beautiful chemistry between Knightley and McAvoy; a performance set to rival Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard in ‘Brief Encounter' for most poignant farewell in cinema, ever.

Not liking?
Snivelling in public. If you're anything like us, and the mere whiff of doomed love sends you into frenzied sobs, then be warned, this film will make you cry like a baby.

Who's in it?
A magnificent ensemble of well known British actors including Brenda Blethyn, Harriet Walters and acting legend Vanessa Redgrave who plays the older Briony, while rising star Romola Garai plays 18-year-old Briony with poise.

Extas?
