What's the story?
Giamatti's character Cleveland Heep is a shy, stuttering shell of a man, hiding in solitude away from the horrors of a family tragedy. He's also a building superintendent and when he finds a strange woman in his tenants' pool, their relationship becomes mutually reliant in a flash. But she is from another world and soon Cleveland is charged with the mission of returning her to that world.
Liking?
This impish tale of a stranded mythical creature is quite a departure for Shyamalan. While it maintains his love of the fantastic, it doesn't rely on the twist element quite so heavily. It's perhaps because of this lack of impact that critics didn't warm to 'Lady in the Water' on its theatrical release. Okay it's certainly not as impressive as 'The Sixth Sense' or as exciting as 'Signs' or 'Unbreakable' but in its own peculiar way, it's quite charming.
Will I get it?
Here is a film brimming with inventiveness and warmth and likely to appeal to a young audience.
So no, probably not.
Will I get bored?
Only if you like Steven Seagal movies.
Perfect for?
A weekday night when TV is crap but you don't want to watch anything too heavy.
Extras?
Plenty of extras to keep you going including: a documentary, auditions, gag reel and deleted scenes.
