What's the story?
Adapted from the novel by Philip K. Dick, the writer who's quirky sense of sci-fi brought us such intriguing works as 'Blade Runner' and 'Minority Report', 'A Scanner Darkly' tells the futuristic tale of a group of friends hooked on a soul destroying drug called 'Substance D'. Paranoia rules over the people who live in this twisted reality like an iron fist. At first glance their fear and mistrust of everyone and everything around them seems laughable, but take a closer look, and perhaps they have good reason to be suspicious…
Liking?
It's a difficult film to keep up with at times. It's fast-paced, flamboyant and fairly mental, but the comedic behaviour of the main characters will keep you glued, as will the striking animation.
Best bit?
All the actors are superb, but Rory Cochrane plays a paranoid loser so perfectly, he'll have you rolling in the aisles… or chuckling heartily at the very least.
Will I get bored?
No. You'll be too busy trying to figure out what on earth is going on. Besides, it's worth staying tuned for the major plot twist at the very end.
Perfect for?
Anyone who likes conspiracy theories.
Extras?
A bit thin on the ground actually, but there is a very interesting featurette about the film which is worth watching – even if it's just to reassure yourself that you weren't the only person who found it hard to keep up with the screwball storylines…
