Go the ballet
What Christmas could possibly be complete with out watching a performance of The Nutcracker? If you fancy something a little bit different, try Matthew Bourne\'s sumptuous and slightly irreverent version at London\'s Sadler\'s Wells Theatre from 13 December to 20 January 2008. Other festive ballet shows across the country include the English National Ballet who are performing The Nutcracker, The Snow Queen and Swan Lake across Manchester, Leeds and London. The Northern Ballet will be performing The Nutcracker in Leeds, St Petersburg Ballet will be performing The Nutcracker and Swan Lake at various theatres across the UK, the Scottish Ballet will be performing Sleeping Beauty in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and the Birmingham Royal Ballet will be performing The Nutcracker at the Birmingham Hippodrome until 13 December...

Cinderella
For a bit of festive fun and frolics you can\'t go wrong with a spot of panto action. This year there\'s plenty to choose from including the lovely Shane Richie in Scrooge at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, Henry Winkler in Peter Pan at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking and Steven Fry\'s fabulous new version of Cinderella at the Old Vic in London... Preston\'s Christmas Ferris Wheel
This Christmas, big wheels will be popping up all over the country... Manchester, London, Belfast and York, each have a 60 meter wheel with 42 capsules that seat up to six people. Capsules can also be hired privately for VIP and champagne rides. Edinburgh has just put up it\'s 33-metre ferris wheel which overlooks Princess Street and all the pretty Christmas lights, and Preston has a beautiful 35-meter wheel on Market Square, both are open until 6 January. The London Eye is putting on some Christmas themed flights that include a complimentary glass of mulled wine or spiced hot apple drink. Somerset House Ice Rink London
Pretty much every major town and city in the country has an outdoor ice rink this Christmas, so there’s no excuse not to indulge in a spot of icy fun. London has an abundance of rinks to choose from, but our favourite sits within the beautiful setting of Somerset House, which holds skating lessons, late skate sessions and DJ nights to boot. Other rinks worthy of note include Edinburgh, which has a very pretty temporary home beneath the twinkling tree lights in Princess Street Gardens, Birmingham’s funky Street Ice rink has an amazing sound system, Bristol Zoo’s Winter Ice Rink, lets you skate around between visits to the animals, while at Cambridge you can be the first to try ice rink bumper cars!

Newcastle: Glow 07
This Christmas there are an abundance of alternative festive light shows and arty installations springing up across the countryside that shouldn\'t be missed. In Liverpool, internationally renowned French artist Franck Scurti has been commissioned to design a series of striking light installations for Kirkdale, Kensington and Garston. In London Anya Gallaccio, a former Turner Prize nominee has been commissioned by The Hayward to create a new display of festive lights while David Batchelor\'s popular display Festival Remix has returned to the Southbank Centre. In Bristol you can take an evening stroll through an Enchanted Wood (until 23 December), and there will also be a week of light shows around across the city between 17 and 21 December. In the north east don\'t miss Northumberland Lights 2007, which will feature various guerrilla lighting events across the region, and in Newcastle, make sure you check out this year\'s GLOW installations

Christmas Deluxe in London\'s Covent Garden
There is a fabulous selection of festive markets to be visited right across the UK this year. Our pick of the bunch include York, which is holding several continental, craft and farmers markets over December, as is Newcastle. In Leeds don\'t miss the fabelhaft Christkindelmarkt from 16-20 December. The lovely Lanes Christmas Market in Brighton on 15 December is great for unique gifts, and for some great Scottish produce, make sure you visit the Highland Village Christmas Market in Edinburgh. Winchester Cathedral Market is another stunner that contains everything a Christmas shopper could possibly desire, while Londoners should make their way to Covent Garden for Christmas Deluxe which includes a great food market, couture gift wrapping, the Christmas decoration exchange and amazing acrobatic performances in the piazza

Masked Ball
Make sure your Christmas party dress gets a proper look in over the festive period by heading off to a ball. In Liverpool you can do it the old fashioned way at Sefton Park Palm House on 11 December when they hold their annual Christmas Tea Dance. If you\'ve never taken a twirl in Blackpool\'s Tower Ballroom, make sure you head to their Christmas Tree Ball on 15 December. High School Musical Ice Tour
If you\'re bored of the usual pantos and ballet performances, try going to an ice show instead. Everyone\'s favourite Disney commodity, High School Musical, is taking to the ice this winter - starting at the O2 arena in London this month, and working its way around the country via Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow in January. Also on the ice this Christmas is Peter Pan in Cambridge, and The Nutcracker in Chelmsford. Also on tour this Christmas are operatic outfit Arias on Ice, who will be appearing on ice rinks in London, The Isle of White, Oxford and Peterborough

Turnmills Together NYE
As usual the UK clubs will be putting on some of their biggest nights over Christmas and the New Year, not least The Cross in London, who will be opening their doors for the very last time on NYE, so make sure you don\'t miss that. Also in London is Tru\'s Do\'s New Year\'s Eve Party at the Sheraton Skyline Hotel, which according to reports will be full of celebrities. At London\'s Turnmills, 2manydjs, Mylo and Simian Mobile Disco will be headlining their Together NYE party. In Manchester, don\'t miss the New Year\'s Eve/New Year\'s Day Warehouse Project parties. Also in Manchester, Tiger Tiger are holding a NYE 007 Bond party. For a full on Hogmanay, get yoursel\' tae Scotland. In Glasgow there\'s a bit of a hootenanny in George Square but Edinburgh is where the real party\'s at... Kasabian, Idlewild and Calvin Harris will all be putting in an appearance

Norfolk Christmas Festival
The UK\'s winter wonderlands can vary from tack central to vintage fairground glory. One such wintry playground of sensational proportions is being held on the Queen\'s Norfolk estate at Sandringham between 15 December and 6 January. With husky sleigh rides, a circus, ice rink, gift fair and ye olde style fairground, you are guaranteed a fabulously Christmassy day out. Fed up of parading drunkenly around the Christmas tree? Then why not take in a festive parade with a twist... In Birmingham there\'s a fabulous canal boat light parade on 9 December, while in Newcastle you\'ll find a bunch of cars tripping the light fantastic on New Year\'s Eve for the Glowmobiles event. Other parades not to be missed include York\'s Festival of Angels and London\'s New Year\'s Day parade
