Sharon Stone calls earthquake “karma”

Basic Instinct star Sharon Stone has said she thinks the recent Sichuan province earthquake tragedy could be karma for China’s poor human rights record.

Sharon Stone has said she thinks the recent earthquakes that have hit China’s Sichuan province could be “karma” for the country’s poor human rights record. Speaking on the red carpet at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Sharon was asked for her thoughts on the tragedy. “I’m, you know, not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans, because I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else. And so, I have been very concerned about how to think and what to do about that because I don’t like that,” she said, before adding, “And then I’ve been concerned about, oh, how should we deal with the Olympics, because they’re not being nice to the Dalai Lama who is a good friend of mine. And then all this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and I thought, ‘is that karma?’ when you’re not nice that the bad things happen to you?” BBC news reports that current figures show 67,183 people have been killed in the tragedy with 20,790 still unaccounted for, while over the weekend a further 420,000 homes in the region were destroyed by aftershocks. Being so close to the Tibet Autonomous Region, the Sichuan Province has a large Tibetan population.
