Coleen and Wayne Rooney welcome a baby boy

Footballer Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen are celebrating the birth of their first child.

Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen welcomed their first child into the world today. The baby boy, who the couple have named Kai Wayne Rooney, was born at Liverpool’s Women’s Hospital at 2.20pm and weighs in at a bouncing 8lb 2oz. "Mother and baby are both absolutely fine," said a spokesman. "Wayne and Coleen are thrilled with the wonderful addition to their family life."

The couple arrived at the hospital just after 10pm on Sunday night and it is believed that doctors decided to induce the labour as Coleen had been due to give birth on 24 October and so was nine days late. Coleen was then checked into the delivery room at 1.45pm on 2 November, and had delivered baby Kai by 2.20pm.

The name Kai is Hawaiian in origin and means Ocean.

It was announced that Coleen was pregnant in April and the couple have vowed not to sell pictures of their baby, despite being offered £1m by a well known glossy magazine.
