In 2007 actress and model Kim Kardashian made headlines when she sued adult video distributor Vivid Entertainment for releasing a homemade video without her consent, of her having sex with then boyfriend, singer Ray J. She won her case and was awarded £2.5m.

At the time of its release, Vivid co-chairman Steve Hirsh said, “We are comfortable that we have the legal right to distribute this video… I’ve seen the video and it’s great. It has over 30 minutes of explicit sex that fans of erotica will find very appealing.” A spokesperson for Kim said, “Are you ****ing me? Kim is going to die… are you sure?”

The video, called Kim Kardashian Superstar, went on sale in video stores in the US in February 2007. At the time Kim, who was Paris Hilton’s Best Friend, went on record saying that she didn’t sell the tape because she didn’t “need the money”.
