On trial... Nude nails

Every month, we'll put your favourite beauty goodies to the test. This time, it's nude-coloured nail polishes tried and tested...

After the onslaught of bright and neon nail polish this summer, it's time for a fresh take. Wipe the slate clean and slick on some natural shades to take you into autumn - think creamy colours in champagne, mushroom or caffè latte. Finding a good nude shade is not as easy as it sounds, so our testers have done the hard work for you...

Bourjois En Toute Affinite in Beige AmbreBourjois En Toute Affinité range

The four new natural shades from Bourjois, created for both fair and darker skins, get the big thumbs-up! I love the modern bottle with a fat brush, which makes easy application. The two deeper shades have a metallic sheen with gold flecks and the lighter shades are pink-based with a creamy edge - absolutely delicious and a great price too.

Paul & Joe Nail Color in Nougat Paul & Joe Nail Color in Nougat

Gorgeous deep-mushroom colour in the bottle, goes on easily with the option of one coat for a light effect or two for a fuller effect - both look good. For me, this is what a nude shade should be - a mid-coffee beige, not too pink and not too flat. Lasted well and looked really professional.

Nars Nail Polish in Temptation NARS Nail Polish in Temptation

I loved the consistency of this NARS polish. The colour was pretty, too, and I don't normally go for shimmery shades. Although it looks pearly in the bottle, it comes out as a fab bubbly colour with hints of iridescent pink, white and gold - not tacky, just creamy and lovely.

MAC Nail Lacquer in Golded MAC in Golded

A barely-there shade with an ever-so-slight glimmer of gold. Good if you want to go bare, but don't want to bare all! Lasts long, doesn't chip and looks subtle, although perhaps a bit on the pale side.

£9, stockists: maccosmetics

Nails Inc in White Chapel Nails Inc. in White Chapel

Nails Inc have an huge range of nudes ranging from light pinks to creamier, more matte beiges. White Chapel is on the whiter side with a bright irridescent pink glow - pretty, but a bit too white for me
