We go backstage at Giles
One of the most hotly anticipated shows on the schedule was the return of Giles Deacon to London and luckily I was right there with my backstage pass ready and waiting to talk shop with Toni&Guy and MAC. One of the most frantic shows Ive been to this season, by the time I arrived the model count had been upped to 50 and Agyness Deyn, Kelly Brook and Abby Clancy were en route to the East London location which meant stresses were running high and it was only through snatched conversations that the look was revealed, but not one to be defeated I powered through - camera in hand and notebook in tow - and this is what I discovered
Hair
Big bouncy waves á la Farrah Fawcett, Charlies Angels and 70s disco fever were the inspiration behind the hair at Giles. Prepping locks with label.m Volume Mousse before sectioning the hair into two parts horizontally across the head, Paul Hanlon, Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck and the Toni&Guy creative team placed extensions around the front sections - close to the temples and ears before each section was tongued and pinned (larger curls through the front set in vertical rows and smaller ones through the back set horizontally). Once theyd set, the clips were then released and the curls were brushed through to open them up. A little soft backbrushing at the roots and a strong centre parting later and the result was a hairstyle that oozed effortless sex appeal.
Make-up
Despite Miranda Joyce being too busy to comment on her cosmetic creations for Giles, I still managed to wheedle out what was happening from her loyal team, and complementing the disco diva hair were eyes like glitterballs. Coated in a layer of MAC glitter, each model was given a dramatic dusting of gold before a sprinkling of pink or turquoise glitter was added around the eyes. For extra definition a coffee coloured eye pencil was used to line the eye, lashings of Zoom Lash mascara was added (mascara, finally!) while the brows were bleached out - talk about party peepers! Not wanting to tone the lips down either, MACs Lady Danger was the shade du jour while the base was kept simple with MACs famous face and body foundation.
Nails
The manicurist everyone wants on their books, I also spotted Sophy Robson creating multicoloured nails for the models, complete with the customary Giles eek emblem. Proving pastels are set to return as another staple of spring/summer, I want to see nail art at every show please!
