A new roster of new and updated ingredients and products have hit the beauty scene. Here's the lowdown on the new serums - what they are and what they can do for your skin

The low down
Over the last few years skin serums have gained in popularity and effectiveness.  A report from Lancome earlier this year, revealed that there has been a 21% increase in women using serum, as part of their skincare routine, over the last two years.  A skin serum is a clear, viscous fluid that, because of its simple, fat-free consistency is able to hold a higher level of active ingredients.  Its job is to give the skin a boost, whether it be hydrating, anti-ageing or brightening.  

The news
There's two bits of news here.  First, the serums that have been updated.  This is because newer, more potent or improved ingredients have now been developed to go in a serum.  Clarins for example, one of the first to offer an anti-ageing face serum, has updated their pioneering Double Serum with Generation 6 Double Serum, £50.  Second, the idea of using a serum with a facial oil.  The idea is that the serum which you apply first, draws the essential oils in the facial oil deeper into the skin.  This means every last drop of plant goodness is put to good use.  

Right for you?
If your every day skincare doesn't seem to be giving you a good enough result, think about complementing it with a serum.   So, if your skin is drier than usual, look for one that's rehydrating.  If it looks dull, look for something that offers skin brightening or line smoothing benefits.
