On trial... Cleansing wipes

Lifeguard Rachel Shaw, 34, from Southampton, finds that her job often means lots of pool action, chlorine exposure and aggravated skin. A working mum of two, she needs a skincare routine that's quick, simple and will help soothe her sensitive complexion, so we challenged her to try out five of our favourite brand's cleansing wipes to see which one best wiped the day away…

Estee Lauder Take It Away
£16 for 45 wipes

'I was initially impressed with the packaging of these wipes – two seals and a tight lid ensure they'll stay fresh and won't dry out, a fairly common problem with some brands. They had a lovely, fresh, crisp fragrance and felt incredibly smooth and only slightly moist. Two wipes were needed to remove make-up, and all traces of foundation was removed within seconds, but telltale 'panda' eyes the next morning proved that my mascara didn't completely budge.'

Garnier Skin Naturals Clean & Soft Cleansing Wipes
£3.19 for 25

'These wipes had lovely, subtly sweet smell – like baby wipes, and I loved the texture; soft, almost creamy, non-scratchy with a gentle print. Only one wipe was need to remove my make-up and it left my skin so soft I didn't even feel the need for moisturiser. The next morning my complexion still felt just as soft and looked radiant and glowing with health. Great value for money too. I'm very impressed - will definitely be using these wipes from now on.'

Stila Petal Infusions H2Off
£13 for 40

'I love Stila cosmetics, so I was looking forward to trying something from their skincare range. As always, the packaging is fab; a lovely baby-blue tall tub with a cutesy floral motif – looked very nice on my bathroom shelf! These wipes were very thin – like soapy wet tracing paper, but had a gorgeous floral scent and two wipes removed all traces of foundation and left my skin smooth, fresh and glowing. Eye make-up was, once again, difficult to budge and these wipes made my peepers sting a bit when I kept trying to remove my mascara, but overall, reasonably pleased with the results.'

Shiseido Pureness Refreshing Cleansing Sheets
£10 for 30

'I loved these wipes. They had a super-smooth texture and a lovely refreshing scent. The wipes are fairly wet which (from past experience) made me think they might sting a bit, but they didn't at all. My skin felt incredibly soothed, cooled and refreshed. All make-up was banished, including stubborn eye make-up, and my skin had a lovely tingly feeling and looked great. Just as good as the Garnier wipes, but Garnier just pip them to the post because of price.'

Olay Daily Facials Express Cleansing Wipes
£4.49 for 25

'These cloths had a slightly odd smell I wasn't too keen on but I am very pleased with the results. The wet, almost soapy texture gives skin a real deep down clean and removed all traces of foundation and waterproof mascara, no panda eyes for me in the morning. My skin felt soft and comfortable – although it did tighten up a bit up to hour later – and I'd feel confident using these wipes on my sensitive eyes again. Very impressed.'
