What’s the point of moisturiser?

It's as normal as brushing our teeth and we do it just as regularly, even our boyfriends and dads are doing it every day. What? Moisturising our skin.

When it comes to buying moisturiser the choice varies wildly, from a 99p tube of basic skin-hydrating gloop, to a luxurious pot of £180 dermis-adoring unguent with a gold-plated waiting list. Pretty much every cosmetic brand has a moisturiser, supermarkets and health food shops sell their own and there is a burgeoning kitchen-table industry in making up moisturisers to save cash in the recession.

But why bother spending a fortune, or not, slathering artificially manufactured creams all over your face – surely it will be fine if you leave it as nature intended?

For one thing, our skin is a barrier, it’s the biggest organ of the body – it holds our insides in and stops the nasties of the outsides getting in, so why wouldn’t we show it a bit of love?

This armour, although super-clever, can’t function properly all on it’s own, it needs help - especially as washing strips the skin of its natural oils. This is where Miss Moisturiser steps up (I’m imagining a super-hero girl come to save us all from the perils of dry skin).

What can moisturiser do for the skin?

If the skin is dry, cracked and dull then it’s not healthy skin, and as dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting explains, “The basic job of the skin is to be a barrier and if that function is challenged skin becomes vulnerable to infections and even eczema, when it’s not well moisturized. So, moisturiser is important to ensure the skin functions properly but also to ensure it feels comfortable - dry, cracked, tight skin feels horrible and looks dull.”

What if you don’t care about how well your skin functions? Well, maybe I can tempt you with vanity…un-moisturised skin doesn’t glow, it’s dull. Hydrated skin looks healthy, glowy and gorgeous – more boys/girls will talk to you if you have delicious, radiant skin! What’s more, fine lines and wrinkles look more prominent on dry skin – tempted to slather on the body lotion yet?
