Monthly must - Winter-proof your skin

Summer is officially over. Get your skin in shape to cope with the coming onslaught of whipping winds and temperature-drops with our top tips for winter skin

winter-proof your skinDon't be tricked by autumn's blue, sunny skies because frosty mornings call for a switch of moisturiser. In fact, it's time to tweak the whole regime as skin screams for more during colder weathers, whether autumn or winter. With some expert tips, here's how to weather-proof your skin to stay gorgeous through the seasons.

"The biggest problem skin faces during winter is the changing temperatures", says Garnier expert Dr Jennifer Jones, BSF Dermatologist. "Both wind and central heating can play havoc due to their dehydrating effects." To help skin cope with these changing temperatures, switch to products with more nourishing ingredients such as Vitamin E or nut oils. These will help moisturise and soften whilst products with added vitamins and antioxidants will help protect skin from weather conditions. Garnier Nutritionist SPF15 Day Cream, £8.49 has the defensive properties of Omega 3+6 and will help shield skin from external damage.

Even if you're strolling through the high street, blustery winds and sunny skies can play havoc on the face so protect your pout with a nourishing stick with added SPF. For the face, pop an eye-cream into your handbag to ward against drying skin around the eyes (a cause of premature ageing) - something like Garnier's new Ultralift Deep Wrinkle A, £9.99 which helps to combat signs of ageing. Another option is the new L'Oréal Paris Derma Genesis Day Cream with SPF15, £18.99, that nurtures cells in the top skin layers, and illuminates and brightens the skin. Derma Genesis contains patented ingredients, including Pro-Xylane (in fact, this is the first mass-market skincare range to include this new generation ingredient) - perfect for mid-October pick-me-ups. Another way to keep a healthy glow going is by using a moisturiser with low levels of tanning agents, something like NutriSummer Face SPF15, £8.99, which is light enough to use daily.

For cleansing, use products with more nourishing ingredients content or ones that are specially designed for drier skins. "Soap should be avoided as it may dry skin further. Instead a gentle moisturising cleanser should be used", advises Dr. Jones. L'Oréal Paris De-Maq' Expert Cleansing range includes a Velvet Crème Wash, £6.99, which is specifically designed for skin which can suffer from tightness and dryness.

If braving the cold is not on your agenda, then it's time to fight the flakiness indoors. Dead skin cells accumulate during winter as our limbs stay undercover for longer so get body brushing and banish those bobbley bits. For some in-shower sparkle, use a smoothing body exfoliator like L'Oréal Paris Exfotonic, £7.99, to leave skin smooth and pesky-free. For post-bathing, smother yourself with an intensive body cream, one with higher oil content like Garnier Body Repair, £4.19 - the added maple sap and shea butter are richly moisturising and will leave you soft and flake-free. Now there's no excuse to look (and feel!) anything but skin beautiful this season.
