On trial... Highlighters

Jo Hunt, a 30-year-old trainee solicitor from London, is keen to regain her summer glow now the colder months are well on the way – and there's no better way to 'glow on' than with a sexy, shimmering highlighter. Jo already likes to use a little illumination with her evening look to 'add a bit of glamour', so we challenged her to try five of the best highlighters on the market to see which was the best glow-getter of the bunch…

Nars The Multiple in Copacabana
£27

'I was initially impressed by the packaging; the tube shape is great for make-up bags and glamour on the go, while the matte-black finish looks really chic. The solid 'stick' texture makes it much easier to apply than a liquid highlighter, and far less messy, with no spillage worries. The shade was a lovely: natural light brown, which blended easily and looked great, although it was a little too glittery for daytime – better suited for a glamorous evening look.'

Benefit Moon Beam
£15

'This highlighter was particularly runny but not as greasy as the others. Application was super-easy thanks to the brush-on applicator and it blended really well with fingers. Left a gorgeous natural golden-pink pearly shimmer that was both subtle and radiance-boosting – so ideal for both day and evening looks. I loved it – this little item will definitely feature in my beauty bag from now on.'

Too Faced Liquid Light
£10

'This liquid highlighter was thick like lipgloss, but non-greasy. Packaged in a cute little bottle perfect for handbags, this pearly white liquid was easy to apply, thanks to the little sponge applicator, but really fast drying and difficult to blend. I loved the iridescent pearl hue of this highlighter, but because of the quick-dry formula I ended up with really obvious white shimmering lines on my cheeks! This item is better for use on brow bones.'

Origins Halo Effect
£17.50

'No brush or applicator means you have to tip the bottle and apply with fingertips, which is fine, but means there's a definite risk of spillage! Slightly scented and a lovely pink-gold shade, this lightweight liquid blended really well and cast a lovely subtle glow on my cheek and brow bones, also great for giving a slight shimmer to shoulders. Really impressed – a well-deserved second place.'

No7 Illuminating Soufflé
£9

'Packaged in a large, chic-looking jar, this item looks good on your dressing table, but is not so good for your handbag. The light-pink mousse texture felt a little thick and greasy on application and it was difficult to judge how much to apply. The sparkly finish makes this highlighter a bit too obvious for a daytime look, but still gives a pretty finish.'
