On trial... Colour-rich lipsticks

Dior lipstick

Bold lips dripping in vibrant colour is one of this season's biggest beauty trends, be it bubblegum pink, neon orange or pillar-box red. With this in mind, we challenged handbag.com editor and total lipstick junkie Natasha Aitken to test the colour richness of five of the best new sticks and shades hitting the shelves this autumn/winter...

Christian Dior - Rouge Dior in Coral Muse, £16.50

This Dior range is utterly yummy (I am hooked on the reds) and this particular shade is very light, but holds its colour well. Not as rich as some of the others tested and a bit slippy on the edges; it’s worth keeping an eye on your smackers for reapplication. Still a fab range.

Lancôme - Le Rouge Absolu Desir in Tender Baiser, £16

A gorgeous, thick lippy with a funky case, this is another great example of a rich, colourful and long-lasting product. The colour here is so deep and pink I only had to reapply once and it glides on smooth and silky. This one got me the most comments - and girls love it.

gloMinerals - gloLip stick in Vixen, £15

Wow! This is an incredible lipstick. Thick, creamy and matt - this new brand, which uses protective and nutritious ingredients, including green tea, vitamins C, A, K and E and high-pigment colours, is surely set to impress. Its richness does mean that you need to keep an eye on bleeding and smudges, but it’s worth it for the incredible results.

Chanel - Chanel Rouge Hydrabase in Lotus Rouge, £13.95

Unlike the other rich lipsticks in this 'On trial...', the Chanel is not so matte. As a die-hard Chanel Rouge fan, I was fearful the touch of sheer on the Lotus would come out too shimmery and light. How wrong could I be? This lipstick may look sheer on the outside, but when applied it is rich and deep without being in any way gloopy. The colour stays good for hours and it feels nice on application. I love it.

Clarins - Rouge Appeal in Frozen Strawberry, £14

Probably the lightest in terms of texture of all these lipsticks, but still thicker than your average application. The Rouge Appeal does need topping up, but the colour is bright and vivid with a touch of shimmer and stands up well against the elements. Boasts coconut oil in its ingredients and consequently smells delicious.
