Trend-settings: '60s chic

By Jessica Hopper

The release of Factory Girl has sparked a retro revival of swinging '60s style in fashion, hair and beauty. Cute mini-dresses and beehives look oh-so-sweet yet sexy with heavy-kohled eyes, false lashes and nude lips. Think '60s icons Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick when it comes to creating this fun and funky spring/summer trend.

The face of the '60s is all about eyes – so skin, cheeks and lips should all be pared down. Pale, neutral hues on the lips and cheeks help to accentuate the eyes, so keep it simple and keep the shimmer to a minimum, we think 'matte' provides the perfect canvas for smouldering eyes and lashings of lashes.

Clarins' latest foundation, the gorgeous Truly Matte SPF15 (£21), provides perfect coverage with a silky smooth matte finish, but also feels light as air, making it an ideal foundation for the warmer weather that's on its way. Top off with a soft cream blush in a muted shade, like Laura Mercier Crème Cheek Colour in Praline (£18) and, the '60s chic must-have, a matte nude lipstick.

Now for the building blocks of this bold look – pop-art peepers. Think smouldering in black and deeply dramatic with thick, lengthy lashes, precision liner and full, furrowed brows framing the eyes (so drop those tweezers pronto and let 'em grow!). White eyeshadow was huge in the '60s and creates the perfect contrast against the dramatic darkness of the lashes and liner, so smudge a little frosty white shadow along your lids first then, using a long-lasting kohl or ink liner pen, draw a thick, precision line along the top and lower lash lines, flicking out ever-so-slightly at the edges. Rest your elbow upon a surface to help in drawing a neat line. Next, Jane Bradley suggests 'curling the lashes, then apply a waterproof mascara, like Max Factor Aqua Lash (£8.99) to ensure the curl stays in, and then top up with a fat very-black mascara. Remember - more is more!' If your lashes are lacking the oomph needed to work this trend, cheat and top them up with falsies.
