17 January 2011: Q&A with John Gustafson

John Gustafson beauty questions

Hi John,
I have really thin lashes and would like to wear some false lashes more regularly but I’m afraid that when I take them off I will lose even more of my real lashes. Are false lashes safe to use on a daily basis? Thanks so much
Claire

Claire,
You are right to be cautious but there is no need to be afraid of using false lashes, just as long as you are careful and buy a proper tube of glue. That is not to say what you get with the lashes is no good, but I would always buy something separate. For instance, my favourite is the Eyelure Surgical Lash Glue and it is not what they give you with the lashes! The glue you buy separately is so much better and is really easy to use - this glue is white but will dry completely clear. Apply a small amount to the back of the lash strip, allow it to partially dry so it doesn’t slide all over your lid, and then press it into place. When the evening comes to a close, gently peel the lashes from the outer corner toward to inner corner. Then hold the lashes very close to the strip and pull off the excess glue so you can use them again. The glue itself is rubbery and will hold for the night but comes off with almost no tugging on the lid. I also use the Shu Uemura Lash Glue and find it to be almost the same, though about twice the price and it takes a little bit longer to set. What I would say in favour of the Shu Uemura is that they have trained make-up artists at their counters that will be more than happy to teach you how to apply the lashes, as well and help to choose which ones will be the best for you and your eye shape. If you are new to wearing falsies then that alone might be worth the extra outlay – plus you will go away wearing them for the night! All in all, buy quality and this is every bit as safe as wearing mascara.
All the best,
John

John,
My boyfriend has told me we are going to go away somewhere warm as a surprise in January! Can I use the sunscreen I have left from when I went away in September? We were only gone for a week and I have quite a lot left and this time we are only going for five days. I bought really good ones and it seems such a waste. Thanks for reading this and I hope you will have the time to answer.
Marnee

Marnee,
Don’t suppose you need someone to carry your bags and make sure you look fabulous while you sun on the verandah?! I would say get yourself some new sun products. Sorry. But the rule is always that your sun products last as long as that particular trip. They will have been out in the sun, warmed up, and then stored who knows where for the last three or four months. Better to be safe than to be sorry. Also, please remember that even though you want to come back with colour, your skin has not been exposed in months and will not be expecting the blast of UV. Get yourself well moisturised in the run up to your break and then take it slowly. Do the first days with higher protection and let your skin build a little resistance. If you get your colour really fast you will lose it just as quickly.
Travel safely,
John
