Beauty Q & A with John Gustafson

Hi John,

After years of trying many different products, I have found the perfect eye and face cream for my 59-year-old skin.  I use it both night and morning.  Trouble is, after a couple of weeks I suffer with skin irritation then burning.  I leave the cream off for a couple of weeks, using another product in the meantime, and then go back to it.  I have found nothing to match this cream and so do not want to give it up.  If I can name names, it's RoC.  Any suggestions?

Fran

Fran,

Fran, Fran, Fran...it is not perfect if it is irritating your skin after a few weeks - your skin is begging you to stop using it. But I understand what it is like to want to use something that you really see results from. What I would do is get yourself a cream for hypersensitive skin and alternate that with your RoC products. But don't wait until your skin wigs out on you to make the change. Try using the Roc for a week and the neutral cream for three days and nights. Then go back to RoC for a week and the neutral for three days and nights. Rest your skin more often and without allowing it to become distressed. With time, you may get your skin to become more tolerant of the Roc and eventually be able to use it more regularly. But be warned - when your skin reacts to a product by burning and feeling irritated, is this really the best course of action? Would you stay with a partner that burned you and irritated you after a couple of weeks? LOL. Never mind...

Cheerio,

John

Dear John,

I am a 26 year old who has oily, dry and slight acne scaring around the mouth skin. I used to go on sun beds all the time when I was younger for years and years I think this has aged me a lot. I have tried many many foundations and powder foundations all types! And I still haven't found one that is a smooth base that lasts all day. I'm sick of buying foundations and wasting money to not use them again and move on to another one. I'm willing to pay whatever for the right one. Like any girl I want that flawless look

Please help!

Carly

Carly,

I am a bit confused by the wording of your question so I hope I answer it in the right way. Sounds like you need a balancing foundation with decent coverage? I would look at Clinique Superbalanced, Dior's new Nude foundation, or Lauder Equaliser. They all hold a balance between drier and oilier skins and give natural lasting cover. I am also really liking the new LaPrairie Anti-Age foundation. Slightly more expensive at £56, but you use very little and the finish is beautiful. Prescriptives foundations are another good bet for you and there is such a wide range of colours and formulations that there is almost always something for everyone. Finally, Chantecaille Future Skin is a gel foundation that has adjustable coverage and exact match concealers to give you the cover where and when you need it. That should give you a lot to go look at and I wish I could be more specific as to which one you should look at first, but I think you may have to have a quick whip round! If you can, ask for samples or take a small set of bottles with you when you go shopping. Explain that you have had endless troubles and would just like a few days worth to see how your skin reacts to it. You should find that all of the companies are more than happy to do this for you. If not? Give them a miss...they don't want your business badly enough.

Good luck,

John

Dear John,

For many years I have used what I consider to be good face creams i.e. La Prairie, Revive etc and was recently introduced to Natura Bisse Tenso lift neck cream and would very much appreciate your opinion on whether or not it is worth the money before I buy. I am 56 in good health a non-smoker and a non-sun worshipper but my neck is definitely letting me down. Thank you.

Mary Robin

Mary Robin,

I have two words for you. Love. And it! This is a gorgeous neck and throat (and bust) product. Expensive, but it gives results that match the stunning texture and smell. When I have a client that is really concerned with her neck and décolletage, this is the one I recommend myself.

Enough said,

John
