As a role model to young women everywhere Sarah Michelle Gellar, 31, has always strived to be known as someone with plenty of brains as well as beauty. Let\'s face it, it\'s not an easy feat for someone who was catapulted into the spotlight at the age of four and has since starred in more box office hits than we can count.
Whether she\'s kicking ass in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, fleeing knife-wielding psychopaths in Scream or simply starring in this month\'s new box office hit Possession, Sarah always manages to look effortlessly glamorous - one of the many reasons why this month she is our handbag.com beauty icon....

When Sarah was just four years old she was discovered by an agent in a New York restaurant. She went on to audition for a part in An Invasion of Privacy but, despite winning an Emmy for her role in All My Children in 1995, it wasn\'t until the release of I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997 that she really made people sit up and take notice. She has since appeared in so many horror films such as Scream 2 and The Grudge that she has become known as a ‘Scream Queen\'. She takes her reputation with a pinch of salt though, saying:
"I\'m always the one who gets killed. And I want it to be really gory. Body parts all over the place. Mangled!" Lovely!
The big break

Directors quickly picked up on the fact that Sarah was a natural at playing a stressed out screaming woman and she was asked to audition for the role of Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, her most famous role to date didn\'t exactly come easily. After auditioning for the leading role, the directors felt she was more suited to play the smaller part of Cordelia but Sarah stuck at it and eventually won over the directors, beating hundreds of women to the starring role.

Directors quickly picked up on the fact that Sarah was a natural at playing a stressed out screaming woman and she was chosen to play the part of Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She went on to win various accolades including being voted as one of People Magazines 50 Most Beautiful People and she was chosen by the readers of FHM as the World\'s Sexiest Woman in 1999. Whilst most women would be jumping for joy at the thought of millions of men doting on them, Sarah shrugged it off saying:
"Being confident is sexy. It\'s important to know you don\'t have to have silicone breasts falling out and a thigh-high skirt. Sometimes you meet people and they think, ‘Another cute little blonde actress.\' That\'s not who I am." Amen to that.

Dressed up or down Sarah always likes to keep her make up natural, opting for a slick of deep red lipstick to transform her look from day to night. Sarah is always open to changing her look to suit a role and few people realise that she is actually a natural brunette and dyed her hair blonde for the role of Buffy. Her interest in different looks caught the attention of Maybelline and, in 1999, Sarah signed a contract with the beauty brand becoming the first celebrity woman spokesperson since Lynda Carter in the 1970s.

With so many appearances in box office hits, Sarah\'s career was really taking off and, after meeting her now husband, gorgeous Freddie Prinze Jnr on the set of Scream 2, her personal life was doing pretty well too. What she, and millions of other people didn\'t realise was, that she was about to embark on playing a wealthy, manipulative teenager in Cruel Intentions. Sarah shocked everyone when her character kisses Cecile (played by Selma Blair) on the mouth, twice! Not so sweet now! The kiss was so spectacular, it won the coveted Best Kiss Award at the MTV Movie Awards, as well as the hearts of many love-struck men.

Dressed up or down Sarah always likes to keep her make up natural, opting for a slick of deep red lipstick to transform her look from day to night. Looks aside though, Sarah is equally as passionate about using her status to raise money for causes which really matter to her. She made the headlines earlier this year when she posed nude to raise money for Coalition of Skin diseases and she has also done work for Habitat for Humanity. Now in her thiries and with a huge career behind her, we are looking forward to seeing what this all American sweetheart does next. One thing\'s for sure, she isn\'t just a pretty face...
