Get the look - Teri Hatcher

She's gone from being the young, straight bobbed Superman aficionado to a glamorous, albeit slightly unhinged Hollywood wife on our favourite TV drama. Her skin is in pristine condition and never goes overboard with the make-up, proving that less is definitely more when it comes to looking hot at 40.

Skincare for older skins should focus on repair and renewal as support tissues begin to weaken and skin loses its firmness. To help speed up cell renewal and reduce the appearance of fine lines, try products with Vitamin A or Retinol. The Revitalift range from L'Oréal Paris is specifically designed for more mature skins and enriched with a Pro-Retinol complex. The Double Lifting Cream, £13.99 has a nifty pump that dispenses a tightening gel and anti-wrinkle cream at the same time, giving you double the wrinkle-busting effects.

Everyone knows the eyes are the biggest tell-tell sign, so using an eye-cream is a must for anyone over the age of 30. The skin around the eyes is delicate and should be treated with care. Garnier UltraLift Deep Wrinkle A, £9.99, is a smooth, relaxing cream that harnesses the power of Vitamin A and ginger to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the eyes. It may not be a facelift but it will soften and lift the area, preparing it for makeup and helping it stay youthful for longer.

Makeup at 40 should be light, dewy but effective too. A little goes a long way on mature skins so avoid any clown-like build-up. There are a host of foundations on the market that deliver formulations specifically for older skins. They are infused with amazing technologies that help brighten and tighten as well as conceal those age lines - without the cakiness. Hand in hand with L'Oréal Paris Revitalift range, there is Visible Lift foundation with SPF 15, £10.99. It has an eight hour moisturising formula (perfect for older skins which are dryer than younger) as well as tiny, light-diffusing particles that give skin a uniform appearance.

Using mineral formulations in foundation and blush is also a wise idea for older skin (and any age skins) as the mineral particles are light reflecting and kind on the skin. The new Blush Minerals Blusher from L'Oréal Paris, £xx is a cute, brush-and-powder in one that is easy to use both at home or on-the-go. It will give a gorgeous, rosy glow fit for daytime shopping or evening soiree.

Teri's eyes are always glistening so use an iridescent or lightly metallic eyeshadow to brighten the area. Maybelline New York Dream Mousse in Divine Gold, £5.99 has a dreamy, glowy effect that can be built up for nights or left sheer for the day. Use with Maybelline New Yor Define-A-Lash, £7.49 and the contrasting colours will make eyes really stand out. As with Teri, keep the rest of the skin neutral, going for glossy caramel lips and rosy cheeks. After all, you don't want to look too much of a desperate housewife!
