This week the internet has been buzzing with opinions on the MAC Rodarte scandal' and if you don't know what we are talking about, where have you been? Here is the low down: MAC's new collection, in collaboration with fashion brand Rodarte, took its recent inspiration from the Mexican town Juarez and the women who go to work in the factories at night. Think pale tones, ghostly colours and soft blush pinks. So far so good, however this Mexican town is actually known to many as one of the world's most dangerous cities with a high crime rate and the strange deaths and disappearances of hundreds of women - many factory workers who were raped - of which a high proportion are still left unsolved. So like us you might now be wondering why some of fashion and beautys biggest brands chose to draw further attention to this? And imagine the shock when it was discovered some of the names of the new MAC products were even the unfitting Ghost Town' and Factory'. Need we say more...
Beauty bloggers from several countries have protested against the collection. "MAC may claim that this collection is highlighting the situation in Juarez, but a collection based around ghostly pale faces and darkened eyes does not seem to me to be a particularly sensitive way of bringing attention to the troubles there," says London Makeup Girl, while Vex in the City commented: "Who in their right mind would want a lipstick named "Ghost Town" or an eye shadow named "Sleepwalker" now knowing where it had stemmed from?"
However MAC and Rodarte have responded recently to the outcry from customers and released this statement: "We understand that product names in the MAC Rodarte collection have offended our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry. We continue to listen carefully to the comments we have received and have the following plans to address concerns:
We are committed to donating $100,000 to a non-profit organization that has a proven, successful track-record helping women in need and that can directly improve the lives of women in Juarez in a meaningful way. We are changing the product names in the M·A·C Rodarte collection.
As we have done in the past, please be assured that we will communicate details regarding our progress in this matter."
Even though they are now changing the names and donating money will you still be buying into this new range?
