We talk to a waxing expert to get all of the information you never thought or wanted to ask

Woman screamingWaxing has become as everyday a procedure as getting a manicure but despite the vast array of beauty salons available to men and women everywhere, finding a decent wax therapist still remains as elusive as the perfect pair of jeans. To help you to separate the good from the incredibly painful, we've asked waxing guru and CEO of London based Ministry of Waxing, Cynthia Chua to give us all the facts on waxing

What is waxing?

Waxing is a method of semi-permanent hair removal that removes hair from the root. Almost any area of the body can be waxed, including eyebrows, bikini area, legs, arms, hands and feet.

Will waxing irritate sensitive skin?

If you have sensitive skin, your therapist should use hard wax rather than strip waxing (paper or cloth strips). At Ministry Of Waxing we have cooked up an exciting new hard wax that is so yummy - chocolate and berry scented! Hard waxes like these are especially good for Brazilian waxing as they soothe and nurtures even the most sensitive of skins.

How long does a general bikini wax take?

Generally 15 minutes for a bikini wax. It normally takes 30 minutes for a first time Braziliian and then should only take 15 minutes on your next visit. It also depends on your preference though... some like it fast, some like it slow and nurturing.

Woman's torso and hot waxWill I get a rash after waxing and how long will it take to go?

If your skin is attended to before and after the treatment, you shouldn't get a rash.

Is waxing very painful? Do you have any tips for reducing the pain?

I've heard so many old wives tales over the years and do you know what, none of them work! A good waxing treatment shouldn't really hurt. There will be some level of discomfort, especially if it's your first time, however it is tolerable.

How long will it take before I get re-growth?

It pretty much depends on your follicle type and growth pattern but generally, you should get waxed approx every four weeks. You can go for a Brazilian wax when there is approximately a 6mm hair length and as long as you are not menstruating.

What is a Brazilian?

Brazilian waxing is the depilation of hair from your pubic area so please, don't try this at home! It takes a skilled therapist to remove the hair from all around this area. A Brazilian generally removes all hair from your pubic area (and also your labia and bottom) but some people like to leave a little landing strip at the front. If you are feeling cheeky, our Ministry waxperts can leave you a shape at the front - hearts are popular at the moment, and even more so around Valentine's Day!

Can I still wear underwear when I am having a Brazilian done?

No, for your therapist to buff your muff perfectly, you will need to remove your underwear.

Woman's lower back and bottomWhat does getting a ‘crack' wax involve and is it part of a Brazilian?

Yes, absolutely. This is the part in between your bottom cheeks and yes, it's part of a Brazilian and important to de-fuzz that area too.

What is a Hollywood wax?

A Hollywood is just another name for a Brazilian.

How long does hair need to before I can wax my bikini line and legs?

Ideally I would recommend a wax when you have hair of 6mm of length.

What's an organic wax?

Organic wax is generally made from natural resins, however, I have to say that I haven't yet seen a 100% per cent certified organic wax on the market. I develop and formulate all our own Ministry waxes so that they offer the best in flexibility, consistency, speed etc, however, I'm always keen to explore new formulas and organic wax is definitely something I'm looking into.

Is waxing my underarms and eyebrows bad for the delicate skin in that area?

Not at all so long as you have it done professionally by trained therapists who know what they are doing.

Is there any reason why someone shouldn't have waxing done?

You shouldn't wax if you have sunburnt skin and if you have any medical conditions, you should always consult your doctor first and also inform your therapist before your treatment. Your therapist/salon should always ensure that you complete a personal care form before you agree to have any treatment.

Does waxing have any long term effects?

Waxing basically offers you fuzz free skin for longer, which is obviously a fantastic long term benefit.
