The perfect ponytail is actually a lot harder than it looks. From unwanted wispy bits and off-centre positions, to making it stay put for hours and eradicating lumps, there's an art to the classic hairstyle.

Luckily for you, we've gathered a load of tips from hair styling pros, to help you perfect the ponytail look.

Getting your ponytail smooth

If you always get those wispy bits creeping out from your ponytail, the trick to keeping things sleek is all in the prep. Backstage at Fashion Week, stylists will blow-dry the hair in the direction they want it to go, smoothing with a soft brush as they go. Then comes product to tame the wisps, and more directional blow-drying until the hair is feeling more cooperative.

How to do a high ponytail

Getting your high ponytail to keep its height can be a pain, especially of you have thick or long hair. To cheat their way to a more secure pony, the professionals section off the top layer of hair, make a tight ponytail using just the lower locks first, then bring the rest of the hair over the mini pony, securing it all again.

Add volume to your ponytail

If your ponytail is looking a bit limp, prep your hair by loosely tonging the lengths, and then softly brushing out the curl. This will add some body and help it swish.
