We've all been there - you're tired, dark circles under your eyes, dull tinge to your skin, but today's the day you really need to look alert, healthy and on top of things.

Here's how to fake it with strategic makeup.

Hydrate your skin

Dehydrated, tired skin needs moisturiser to boost its vitality, plumpness and radiance. Massage your moisturiser into your skin for about 30 seconds to help boost circulation and reduce puffiness.

Boost your radiance

If you're looking tired, amp up your skin's radiance with an illuminating cream like Elemis Flash Balm. Use it after your regular moisturiser, before you apply any makeup. Now's the time to apply your primer too, to stop everything sliding off.

Illuminate dark circles and dull skin

Tactical illumination is key. Using a highlighter like the Bare Minerals Well-Rested Brightener pen, cover any dark areas like bags under your eyes and in the inner corners, or help give heavy eyelids a lift. If your complexion is really struggling, mix a little brightener into your foundation too.

Cover and conceal with brightening foundation

Tired skin is normally dull and rough. A brightening foundation with those famous 'light reflecting particles' will help brighten your whole face, and lift that grey tinge. Apply your concealer after foundation, to take the final edge off any dark areas or red patches.

Make the most of your eyebrows and eyelashes

Well groomed eyebrows give the impression of a well groomed face, even it's not really the case. Fill in any gaps and tame unruly strands with a balm or clear brow gel. Then curl your eyelashes to open up your eyes, and make the most of a lengthening mascara.

Add a healthy glow with blusher and bronzer

Colour on your cheeks is the fastest way to fake good health. Smile, and apply a rosy blush the apples of your cheeks, blending it up and out towards your cheekbones.

Add colour to lips with a tinted balm

Tired skin is often dehydrated, so layering on the lipstick might end up in a cracked, peeling mess. Try tinted lip balm to hydrate and add a pop of colour at the same time.
