Attending to a broken heart after a bad break-up has led many a woman to seek solace in the salon chair. Often it's the perfect pick-me-up, but sometimes the consequences are, well, regretful to say the least.

In a self-penned piece in this week's Stylist magazine, Alexa Chung has her say on the age-old hair debate, "Hair is so linked to how we feel and everyone goes for something radical after a break-up.

"But my advice if you've just suffered heartbreak or you've broken up with someone is to not touch your hair."

Adding, "It's the first thing women do, but you're not in a fit state to make decisions that are long term. You'll have to spend the next four years growing it out."

The 29-year-old presenter and British fashion mogul has a fair point. It's rare that anyone feels on top of the world right after a big split – be it a three-month fling (that definitely meant more) or a seven-year stint with your first love. Sigh.

That said, emerging from an unhappy relationship into the free-spirited single life can be (it definitely is) cause for a 'drastic' new look.

Your youthful bob that soon became lifeless and pony-stricken can be chopped up, layered and injected with glossy tones. Hello boys, etc!

But, and as Alexa also points out, Britney Spears is the prime example of when all this goes horribly wrong after she famously took the razor to her blonde locks following a very public split from Kevin Federline in 2007.

No one wants to see a sobbing woman pawing at an ice cream pot while a reluctant stylist chops at her tresses… but give yourself time to grieve for a relationship and proceed to do whatever the hell you want to your hair. Even if that means finally booking the cut and blowdry you never had time for.
