7 natural home remedies for sunburn from your fridge

Mush up some fruit & slather on some yoghurt to take the sting out of sunburn this summer.

Strawberries
Ouch. You took on the sun and the sun won, leaving you red, burnt and in pain.

But if you are miles from a pharmacy or an aloe vera plant, there are plenty of home remedies that can help take the sting out of sunburn that you can find in the depths of your fridge.

Home remedies for sunburn


Cold water
Not just for the burn, but for you. Rehydrate, rehydrate, rehydrate. You need to up your water intake pronto to stop getting dehydrated, help your skin recover and prevent sunstroke.

Plain yoghurt
Yoghurt is a natural coolant. Remember how it was the only thing to help stop your mouth burn after eating that Spicy biryani? It can do the same for your skin. It naturally cools, moisturises and can restore the pH balance to your skin.

Slather it on the burnt skin, leave for 10-15 minutes (people would pay good money for that at a spa) and then wash off in a cool shower.

Strawberries
Strawberries contain tannic acid which can help take the sting out of sunburn. Simply take a few strawberries, mash them up and spread on the skin. Leave for a few minutes before washing off.

Potatoes
Slice up some washed potatoes and lay them on the burnt area. The natural starches found in potatoes will help to draw the heat out of your skin and they have been known to act as a pain reliever.

Fresh mint & green tea
Mint naturally cools and soothes while the tannic acid and theobromine found in green tea also helps relieve pain and heal damaged skin.

Boil up some green tea bags and some sprigs of fresh mint, then wait for the tea to cool completely. Use cotton wool to apply the mix to the burnt area, or soak a compress in the cool tea and place on top. You can also put the cold teabags directly on the burn.

Oats
Take a bath with some oats. The polysaccharides in them will coat and heal your skin, while the cool water will help calm your skin and keep it moisturised.

Don't just chuck the oats in the bath though, fill a sock with the oats and tie the top. Throw the sock into the bath, and occasionally squeeze it to get all the goodness out. But don't stay in too long else it might dry out your skin.

Honey
It's pretty messy, but honey is known to help skin irritation and heal damaged cells.
