Latest findings suggest sugar could be worse for your health than fat - but could too much of the sweet stuff also stop you having a baby?

Sugar
Recent news suggests sugar is going to be this year's tobacco in terms of public heath warnings.

Latest findings from the science world have suggested that sugar may be one of the most harmful things for our bodies, and could actually do more damage than fat.

Sugar may also have another harmful effect on people wanting to start a family, as too much of the sweet stuff could lessen your chances of conceiving.

High sugar consumption causes fat to accumulate around the middle and this is bad news for both men and women when it comes to baby making.

For men, fat around the abdomen releases oestrogen which can affect their sperm count, and for women, there is a higher risk of hormone disturbance which will affect the menstrual cycle.

"Being very overweight is often a key reason why couples are struggling to have children," explains Melanie Brown, expert fertility nutritionist at The Harley Street Fertility Clinic.

"Too much fat stored around the abdomen in both sexes is like a toxic hormonal minefield," she adds.

Brown recommends watching out for those secret sugars hidden away in supposedly healthy foods like granola and fruit juice, avoid processed carbs and any products labelled 'low fat' as they are packed with nasty sweeteners.
