An Interview with the Fun Lovin Criminals (continued...)

Reflecting on the good, the bad and the ugly of NYC is certainly a strong theme on this, their sixth album. Throughout the course of the record we are taken on a tour through the lives, loves, oddities, religions and political problems of the Big Apple and its many occupants. I ask Hughie what sort of feeling he hopes people will be left with after listening to the album, and he replies, 'I guess that their cousins from New York sent them a postcard…'

The album, I discovered - much to my disappointment - was recorded on dry land and not, in fact, on a yacht, as stated on their press release. As you can imagine, this dramatic revelation begged the question of where this rumour could possibly have stemmed from, but to be honest, by the end of the interview the answer was by no means clear. 'That was a lie,' says Hughie. 'Our press guy kinda got the wrong end of the stick with that.'

'Yeah,' says Fast, picking up the story and dragging it off in a whole new wacky direction. 'I told him that my father had a Ganoe, which is a mix of a canoe and a robot… No, not a robot, a rowboat. So if you can imagine a rowboat and a canoe with a robot-like engine that's electric, that makes no noise…' He tries to continue, but is swiftly cut off by Frank, who steps in, I hope, to clear the matter up. 'No, what happened was that this guy took us out sailing, in fact he took us on it the other day and…' 'Why can't you guys just say – no we didn't record it on a boat and leave it at that?' yells Hughie. 'You see what I have to put up with? When they're not wrestling all over the place, they're breaking my balls!'

Suddenly the chaos of our conversation seems to be catching, and there are mobile phones and door bells going off all over the place. Somewhere in the corner of the room R2D2 seems to be having his say on the matter too, but it turns out to be Fast's new ringtone (he's a big Star Wars fan).

Within seconds there are people pouring into the flat and things start to get very confusing. There's a boy and a girl behind me trying to shake my hand, and another man has just arrived with a very nice-looking guitar, which Hughie is waving excitedly in my face. I turn to my left to find that Fast has gone off on one again, and I'm not really sure what we're supposed to be talking about. I seem to be losing my grip on proceedings rather rapidly, so I decide that it's time to get down to the nitty gritty and find out about their love lives.

I lean over towards Frank and, in a conspiratorial fashion, ask whether recent rumours are to be believed about Hughie having found love with It-Girl Beverley Bloom. 'I think you'll find that that's another lie,' laughs Frank. 'We were in Germany at the time when this was all in the papers, and he said, 'How can I have been out with this Beverley last night when I'm stood here reading about it in Germany?"' 'So has he even kissed her?' I pry. 'Yeah, but that was two years ago now.'

I'm beginning to feel like a naughty schoolgirl gossiping in the playground, but that doesn't stop me from asking just who is attached and who isn't. 'We're all single,' says Fast, getting in on the action. 'We're all single all the time…' he tails off and pulls a puppy-dog face, which has Frank in stitches again.

'Are you saying you'd like to settle down, Mr Fast?' I enquire. 'Yeah, we try to settle down. I mean, if you're talking about settling down to have a family, then yeah that's something we all aspire to one day. I think for Hugh and myself, we acknowledge that before we take that step, we need to be able to properly take care of those people. Running around, acting like a hooligan and living the lifestyle we do - we're not going to be able to give the proper woman the love and support she deserves.'

'Are you going to shut up?' says Frank, cutting him off before Fast can damage their bad-boy image any further. Before I leave, I decide to give them all a little present, which I hope will confuse them as much as they've confused me during one of the most bizarre half-hours of my life.

'Here you go boys. The Kinder Eggs are on me.'
