An Interview with Teri Hatcher

The daughter of a nuclear scientist and his computer-programmer wife, Hatcher could have applied herself to almost any occupation involving science. At college in Cupertino, California, the young Hatcher found time in between studying mathematics and engineering to captain the cheerleaders. Her path to stardom only really became clear when she accompanied a friend to an audition as moral support, only to land the part herself.

Fed up with playing air-head bimbos, Hatcher auditioned for the role of the sassy and strong Lois Lane in a TV Superman series. 'I'll be forever grateful for Lois Lane,' says Hatcher, recalling her big break. 'I have fond memories of that show and I made a lot of friends. I still get asked about it by fans now. There's even been talk of going back and doing some more – like TV movies - but I don't want to revisit her. I don't mind that people still think of me as Lois. I take it as a compliment. It just means I have to work harder to prove I can do much more than Lois, which I think I have.'

At 40, she's still strikingly beautiful, with a body girls half her age would kill for. Hatcher works out periodically to keep her figure and is one of many in Hollywood who have found a rather erotic way of getting that extra tone - stripping.

'Yes, that's true,' laughs Hatcher at the mention of her risqué keep-fit regime. 'It's all geared around stripping moves and you actually dance on a pole and learn how to lapdance. I know it sounds funny, but it's great for all your muscles and it's actually really empowering because it's not about turning a guy on - it's about turning yourself on and learning to be comfortable with your own body.'

Hatcher insists her clothes stay on when she does her routine, but she has no qualms about baring all in her forties. And on Desperate Housewives she and the rest of the girls are often required to do just that.

'I have no hang-ups about nudity,' says the star. 'If there is an integral, honest reason for the nudity, I'll do it. But I'm not so free about nudity that I want to run around in the buff all the time, especially on film.' Of course, it's nothing Superman, with his x-ray vision, hasn't seen before.
