An Interview with Jude Law (continued)

An Englishman in New York
Jude's first acting job was treading the boards in an off-Broadway play, and he still holds the city dear in his journey to superstardom.

'I've been coming to New York for 11 years,' says Jude with a smile. 'My first job was in New York on stage and I love the city. Were I on a different path, I may have been living there maybe 10 years ago.

'So coming here to actually film on the streets, driving around was a dream - I had a ball. It breathed a huge amount of life into all the studio work that we had already done in and around London.

'As an Englishman coming here, I always feel like something might happen. Like you always feel you can stay up a little longer, you can sleep a little less, you can squeeze in another gallery or another party, you know? I used a lot of that in Alfie's kind of energy and love of this place.'

Scooter heaven
When he's not chasing women or talking to cameras, Alfie is riding his scooter in his spivvy clothes and that proved almost as much fun for Law as playing with the girls in New York.

'I loved that Vespa - even though I couldn't get it to start sometimes,' he recalls. 'It was so much fun to ride. When we started filming they asked me, "Do you want a helmet?" and I said no. No way. That made it even more fun. I loved the clothes, too. I managed to keep a couple of outfits.'

Back to the future
Right now Law is busier than he has ever been. He has an incredible eight films either on release, coming out soon or in production.

That means a hectic timetable of filming and promotion that takes in every corner of the globe. Reading between the lines, it's clear that schedule is taking its toll on a star who would rather be snuggling up to Miller and planning a wedding - maybe.

'I could let myself get weighed down with a cynical view that these films that took me two years to make have all come out or will come out in a period of like five months, but that seems to be the reality of the situation and I have to look at that positively rather than negatively,' says Law diplomatically.

'I have got no say in the matter. I have to live with it, so I'm trying to be positive.'
