We are, of course, describing Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay and, purely for your benefit, we managed to grab a few precious moments with him before he leapt onto a Parisian stage to perform a private gig laid on to promote the new Jamiroquai limited-edition Sony Ericsson K600i phone.
Why did you decide to collaborate with Sony Ericsson and Orange for this project?
We were approached by Sony Ericsson and Orange to come up with a limited-edition phone and as it was quite a unique and unusual idea, we did it. It was as simple as that.
How much of an input did you have into the design?
Not a huge amount in terms of a technical input - I'm a singer, not a phone-maker. I can't imagine myself sitting there working out the microchips! I think the exciting thing about it is that this gig is going to be streamed live tonight onto people's mobiles. It's never been done in France before, as far as I know, and it's certainly the first time we've done it.
Are you worried that some of your fans might think that you've sold your soul to the devil somewhat by hooking up with a mobile phone company?
No, we don't think that at all I think if I was offered £2 million by Pepsi Cola to team up with the Spice Girls and Boyzone, that would be selling your soul. No, I don't think so at all, because I think this type of communication is the way forward, and this type of phone for me is great. When I'm abroad I can actually see the people I'm talking to and I like that idea. I've been waiting for that kind of thing for years video messaging, etc. So I don't think so, I think it's been a fairly natural partnership, to be honest.
At the moment there's quite a lot of stuff that Jamiroquai fans can download from the Orange website for this phone, but will that be ongoing and, if so, what sort of things will be available?
That is going to be the case. There will be some more live stuff that we've done that we'll let go, some more videos and so on.
You're quite famous for having some top DJs and producers remix your work, but who would you really like to remix your material, who hasn't already?
That's interesting, actually... I don't think Joey Negro's ever done one for us - that would seem like a natural thing for us. I always find the remix thing quite difficult, I'm really fussy about it, we're all fussy about it. We listened to some that came from America for Feels Just Like It Should and it was just some of the most dire, shocking material I have ever heard. We've had remixes come through that bear absolutely no relation to the tune whatsoever - it could be anybody! I do find that quite difficult.
There are some rumours circulating that you're back together with Denise Van Outen is that true?
That's not true.
She came to one of your gigs recently though, didn't she?
She came to the gig, I mean, we are on speaking terms, but you know, there's nothing more to it than that. We're not getting back together. It's not going to happen.
Is it true that you are launching your own fashion line?
Well, there's lots of different things going on at the moment, I'm in talks with some people from Japan to do something and I'm also talking to Hugo Boss to do a very small line, which I want to keep to just 10-12 pieces, but what I want to do is sit with the designers for a couple of days bashing some stuff out...
Hats?
No, not hats, no, but I think it will have an almost utilitarian feel to it really, possibly some luggage as well, really based around the fact that I spend most of my life travelling. There's so much paraphernalia that comes with you now - you know, computer, iPod, speakers and, of course, what everyone forgets about these things is you've got all these power packs and wires and stuff to go with it, so I'm trying to come up with a funky piece of almost like
Well, I shouldn't really tell you, should I?!
Anyway, there will be a nice piece of luggage and something for the outdoors. I've always wanted to do something that's stylish and streetwise, but usable, which would look just as good on the streets of London as it would up in the hills of Scotland, using Goretex and the latest materials, because I think Hugo Boss have so much access to some great textiles. I really want to get involved in the design, as opposed to what a lot of people do and take last year's stuff and stamp the brand on it and there you go you've got your own line. I'm desperate to do something that's upper-end quality, that's not jumping on the hip-hop bandwagon saying 'Hey, I've got my own line, and some really cheap perfume.'
Jamiroquai's new single 'Don't Give Hate A Chance' will be out on 7 November 2005 on Sony Records. If you would like to purchase a limited edition Jamiroquai K600i 3G phone click here.
