Supporting Actor: Winner - Christoph Waltz Inglourious Basterds
Nominees:
Alec Baldwin It's Complicated
Christian McKay Me And Orson Welles
Alfred Molina An Education
Stanley Tucci The Lovely Bones
Handbag.com's prediction: Christoph Waltz
Christoph Waltz brilliantly pitched performance as the dastardly Nazi Colonel Hans Landa has lead to him winning all the best supporting actors awards so far this year. The trend didnt stop at the Baftas.
Supporting Actress: Winner MoNique - Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire
Nominees:
Anne-Marie Duff Nowhere Boy
Vera Farmiga Up In The Air
Anna Kendrick Up In The Air
Kristin Scott Thomas Nowhere Boy
Handbag.com's prediction: Anne-Marie Duff
Now, were not saying the Baftas have a British bias, but they do like to reward the best of British talent so we figured Anne-Marie Duffs turn as John Lennons mother in Nowhere Man would win it. But, like the Golden Globe judges before them, the British Academy went for MoNiques amazing performance.
Outstanding British Film: Winner - Fish Tank
Nominees:
An Education
In The Loop
Moon
Nowhere Boy
Handbag.com prediction: Fish Tank
Its been a great year for British film and any of the nominees would have made deserving winners. While our heart was with Duncan Jones incredible Moon, our head told us it would be Fish Tank. The startling coming-of-age drama won honours at the Cannes Film Festival and rightly got the Bafta nod too.
The Orange Rising Star Award: Winner Kristen Stewart
Nominees:
Jesse Eisenberg
Nicholas Hoult
Carey Mulligan
Tahar Rahim
Handbag.coms prediction: Kristen Stewart
Awards that are decided for by the public are notoriously hard to predict but we noticed a voting trend with the Rising Star gong. The last three winners Eva Green, Shia LaBeouf and Noel Clarke were all stars of successful franchises (James Bond, Transformers and Dr Who respectively). So we assumed the trend would continue and Twilight star Kristen Stewart should have the honours sown up. And we were right!
Director: Winner Kathryn Bigelow The Hurt Locker
Nominees:
James Cameron Avatar
Neill Blomkamp District 9
Lone Scherfig An Education
Quentin Tarantino Inglourious Basterds
Handbag.com's prediction: Quentin Tarantino
If this was down to box office business success then James Cameron would have wrapped this up a long time ago. While theres no doubt Avatar is an incredible achievement, but we felt its reliance on special effects would stop James Cameron and clear the way for Quentin Tarantino. Bah, what do we know?! As anyone who has seen The Hurt Locker will confirm, Kathyrn Bigelow was the deserving winner on the night.
Leading Actor: Winner Colin Firth A Single Man
Nominees:
Jeff Bridges Crazy Heart
George Clooney Up In The Air
Jeremy Renner The Hurt Locker
Andy Serkis Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
Handbag.com's prediction: Colin Firth
After overdosing on rom-coms like Love Actually, Bridget Jones and Mamma Mia! in the last few years it was easy to forget that Colin Firth has some serious acting chops. His role in Tom Fords debut A Single Man changed all that though.
Leading Actress: Winner - Carey Mulligan An Education
Nominees:
Saoirse Ronan The Lovely Bones
Gabourey Sidibe Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire
Meryl Streep Julie & Julia
Audrey Tautou Coco Before Chanel
Handbag.com's prediction: Carey Mulligan
So far this award season, Sandra Bullock has won all the major awards for her role in The Blind Side. But, with Bullock out of the nominations at the Baftas, the category was wide open. Now, its never a good idea to bet against Meryl Streep, but we tipped Careys breakout role in An Education to win on the night and boo-yah! we got it right!
Best Film: Winner - The Hurt Locker
Nominees:
Avatar
An Education
Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire
Up In The Air
Handbag.com's prediction: An Education
In the awards season build up, all the talk in the US is of former couple James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelows films going up against each other. Theyre both safe pick for the Oscars but we know the Bafta panel like to back British. So our money went on An Education. And it was just as well we never made it to the bookies as Kathryn Bigelow collected her second major award of the night!
